Well, hello, I'm Andrew Janzen, co-founder, and CEO of Street Simplified. I left NASA’s JPL to build video analytics that eliminate crashes and saves lives. We've worked at over 95 locations with 20 agencies in 7 states, including Caltrans, ODOT, and Seattle DOT. What we're proposing is a detailed and comprehensive location review across your network, running safety analytics at a tremendous number of locations, providing site-specific findings and mitigations built by safety experts, and evaluating the effectiveness of these changes with before-after studies.
Rather than waiting for crashes to happen to solve ped bike safety, you need to identify locations that may never yet have had a crash. We will use the VDOT reported crashes to identify hot spots and look at pedestrian and cyclist paths from Strava to identify unmarked crossings with heavy foot traffic. We'll work with Fairfax families for safe streets to crowdsource community-identified near misses. Budget permitting we will investigate the Moonshadow connected vehicle data to identify where drivers may be breaking or swerving to avoid pedestrians.
Equity is important. Using the U.S. Census equity emphasis areas and local input from your team, we will prioritize sites where communities need it most.
You need more than near misses.
You need to know when and where people cross and how fast vehicles are going, as these are known key risk indicators even when near misses are not happening. We study intersections and mid-block crossings and require no agency hardware connectivity or power at intersections. We extract the state of the traffic light directly from the video just like drivers do and use this to detect pedestrian non-compliance, red-light-running, and intersection blocking. If you want other capabilities, we'll build them for you.
Every site is different.
At a location in Florida, we identified a simple timing change to a right turn on red restriction, which costs almost nothing to implement and would be hard to pick up without our analytics using multiple cameras. We track pedestrians even when blocked in one or more views. We highlight nuances: [a] pedestrian pushed the [crosswalk] button and waited patiently for 17 seconds before choosing to brave the highway—easily enough time to provide the pedestrian with a walk. Our high-resolution cameras and ai pick up events even in the middle of the night.
This wasn't a one-off event. Drivers ran red lights 309 times in one day in patterns that could be mitigated by proper clearance intervals, detection improvements, and Enforcement. Our analytics our accessible via our beautiful online platform without a subscription fee.
What you need is answers, not data.
